"Drinking and pain killers probably isn't the best idea." If she pushed the issue, he'd give her something but right now he wasn't going to volunteer.

"I'm so sorry he's gone, Annie. No matter what I thought, he was a good agent and he cared about you."

He was also sorry that she had to lose a friend this early in her career, but he was keeping that to himself.
